Honors Academy

Sugar Bowl Academy is an Honors Academy that seeks and establishes, where possible, academic and philosophical alignment specific to Sugar Bowl Academy’s Honors Program. An honors program can be an enriching experience and enhance a student’s overall undergraduate academic experience.

Honors classes address the same learning and assessment standards of the Academy’s Core classes, yet allow Academy scholar-athletes to engage in greater academic rigor, navigate additional learning content at an accelerated pace, and participate in higher learning and assessment standards for both the quality and quantity of a students’ work. Honors classes are designed for Academy scholar-athletes who love learning and seek the opportunity of greater degrees of success at colleges and universities, both domestically and internationally.

Teachers in the Honors programs are committed to challenging students to exceptionally prepare them for college-level course work. As Honors level courses are more rigorous than regular courses, classes will most likely require additional reading, research, essays, teaching of content, and special projects. Teachers cover curriculum content and learning at a college-level pace, in greater depth while requiring from students more complex analysis, greater engagement, and additional sources.

All Honors courses will require five of the following imperatives for Academy scholar-athletes to adhere to as they study.

  1. Pre-Grade entry requirement of a B+

  2. On-going, in-course grade of B+

  3. Commitment to student-driven communication and timeliness with Faculty (96-hour rule)

  4. Academic integrity that is above reproach

  5. In-course Peer Teaching

  6. Additional Major Work or Major Research Project

  7. Public Display of Major Work/  Major Research Project

  8. Fulfillment of Academic and Course Sequencing for Specific Course Electives

Should Academy scholar-athletes fulfill the above imperatives for their relative Honors course, a title of ‘Honors’ will be assigned to their respective course (i.e.: Calculus Honors). At anytime throughout the duration of the course, if a scholar-athlete fails to fulfill one of the imperatives above they will immediately drop-out of their designated Honors course (i.e.: Not communicate with a member of Faculty within a timely manner; Be found to engage in academic plagiarism; Witness their grade drop below a B+).

Starting Academic Year 2024-2025, should an Academy scholar-athlete be found to have completed six Honors courses, they will be granted the benefit of receiving a graduation diploma with an Honors designation and have their names placed on the Sugar Bowl Academy Scholar-Athlete Academic Honor Board.

Sincerely,
