Located at Lake Tahoe, California, Sugar Bowl Academy is a fully accredited college preparatory high school for competitive skiers. It's a world-class ski academy for Alpine, Nordic and Freeride athletes.

What’s it like living at SBA?

The activities listed below are typical for a non COVID-19 year.

1. What can I do on the Weekend?

Each weekend in the fall and spring, an activity is offered by SBA staff. Last year, activities included:

  • Bowling

  • Laser Tag

  • Dinner and Movie Nights

  • UNR Football Game

  • Mini Golf

  • Go-Karting

We also offer on-campus activities during the week and on Friday nights, such as:

  • Trivia Night

  • Pumpkin Carving

  • Cookie Decorating

  • Super Bowl Party

  • Gingerbread House Decorating

  • Easter Egg Decorating

During the day, you can explore the local surroundings by going hiking, mountain biking, or dipping your toes in a nearby lake. On the weekend in the winter, you will be skiing!

2. What should I bring when I move in?

An unfurnished room includes a lofted extra long twin bed, a wardrobe, a set of drawers, a desk, and a chair. Garbage and recycling cans are provided. We recommend that you bring the following items:

3. How are roommates assigned?

At the end of each year, residents fill out a questionnaire which we use to create roommate matches. We also take age and discipline into account. 

4. Is there a Study Hall?

We have study hall from 7 - 9 p.m. Monday-Thursday. At this time, you should be working on schoolwork or preparing for athletics (ex: tuning skis). You may work in your rooms, in the common area, in the study room, or in the academic building. 

5. Is there a bedtime?

On weeknights Hall time is at 10:00 p.m. You should be in your room by 10:30 p.m. Seniors may stay out in the common area until 10:30 p.m. and should be in their rooms by 11 p.m. On weekends, bedtime is pushed back until 11 p.m. 

6. Is there a kitchen?

We have a stovetop, an oven, and a microwave for any cooking or baking needs. 

7. What if I'm sick?

If you are sick, you should check in with whoever is on duty or the Head of Residential Life. If you are too sick to attend classes or training, an email will be sent out to all staff, but it is still your responsibility to reach out to your teachers for school work. We have most over-the-counter medications. 

8. Can i bring my car?

Seniors are allowed cars in spring and fall.

9. When can my parent visit me? Can I spend the weekend with my family?

We are happy to accommodate visiting families. The more notice we have, the better in order to facilitate activity and meal planning. 

10. Where can I do my laundry?

We have four washing machines and four dryers in the basement.
