Sugar Bowl Academy Skiers Shine on Opening Day of US Cross-Country Champs
Anchorage, AK (January 2, 2018) – The U.S. Cross-Country Skiing Championships opened today at Kincaid Park, in Anchorage, AK and racers from the Sugar Bowl Academy Nordic Team stormed out of the gate in the junior fields. Leading the charge was Hannah Halvorsen ('16) currently skiing for the Alaska Pacific University Nordic Ski Club. Halvorsen, a 2017 medalist at the FIS World Junior Championships, showed that she's in form to compete with the world's best again by earning 14th place in the 10km freestyle, 2nd place for Junior Women. Sophia Sanchez ('19) earned 9th place amongst Junior Women and 6th place for U18s in her very first U.S. Championships race.
"Sofia went out of the start hard and kept her speed high," said SBA Nordic Director, Martin Benes. Benes indicated that the conditions were challenging with significant new snow fall throughout the day. He was especially pleased to see Sanchez shine on her first national level outing.
In the men's race, Haydn Halvorsen ('19) earned 33rd place overall, 6th place for Junior Men. Benes characterized Halvorsen's performance as an outstanding start. "He executed a race plan that played to his strengths..." Benes said. "It's great to see him demonstrate the gains he's made in training."
The strong start for the three SBA skiers puts them in contention for being named to U.S. Teams to either the FIS World Junior Championships or the FIS Scandinavian U18 Championships. The U.S. Cross-Country Skiing Championships continue Friday, Sunday and Monday. The series serves as the final trials for the U.S. Olympic Team, as well as U.S. Team Trials for World Junior/U23 Championships. More information and results can be found at:
