SBA Students, Faculty Work Featured at National Language Convention

The annual convention of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages was held late last month, with SBA's own Peyton Jobe among those selected as a presenter.

This year's international convention spanned three days (November 22-24th) and brought together over 6,000 language educators in Orlando, Florida, from all languages and levels, K-12 to college and university. Mr. Jobe delivered a one-hour session entitled New Approaches + Traditional Best Practices = Meaningful Mobile Language Learning.

Among the SBA students whose work was featured in Mr. Jobe's presentation were Michael Cooper, Luke Winters, Casey Jobe, Julia Puchkov, Kathleen Smith, and Lauren Dunn.

"Since the theme of this year's convention was New Spaces, New Realities: Learning Any Time, Any Place, and knowing that we here at Sugar Bowl Academy are at the forefront of blended learning to meet the needs of the mobile student, I knew we had something to offer the international language teaching community.

"It was an opportunity to showcase what we are doing in the SBA Spanish department to move toward active learning environments in both physical and virtual spaces: from Notability applications within the classroom space itself to Google Hangouts in virtual spaces and flipped Explain Everything videos developed via iPad app to other virtual spaces such as YouTube.

"It was also an opportunity to compare what we are doing on the mobile learning front and to gather ideas from other approaches at both the K12 and college levels of language instruction. I attended a number of presentations that gave me great ideas about how to improve on what we are presently doing, and am grateful for the Sugar Bowl Ski Team Foundation's support of this kind of professional development opportunity."
